After 15+ years of using our HP LaserJet Series II, it was time to move on. We wanted to purchase a multifunction printer that had a wireless connection, and because we use both Mac and PC in the office, we needed the printer to work well with both. We finally came across the Lexmark Interpret S405, picked it up for $110 from Office Max.
Opening the box there was a start-up guide, driver CD, power adaptor, started ink cartridges and printer. At first glance the printer looks like it is made from cheap plastic but that is only looks, the feel of the machine is actually quite solid. The printer has a CMYK ink cartridge system (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black), something that we wanted. Set-up was quite simple, you do need to plug the printer into a computer for the initial set-up, just follow the on-screen instructions. We opted to use the printer completely wirelessly; a nice function if you want to keep the printer in a central location that may be away from any computer.
Wireless set-up is very simple, we run a simple 802.11n with WPA2; the printer instantly connected and hasn’t been connected to a computer since.
The Lexmark S405 also has a digital media memory card reader, which we haven’t used yet.
Printer:
- Good quality prints on regular paper
- Fast printing
- Draft Quality still isn’t too bad and it makes the printing around 3x faster
- Starter cartridges are just that; starters
Scanner:
- Decent quality, not pro but good
Copier:
- Works VERY well
- Document feed is easy to use but you have to use paper that is all the same size
Fax:
- Have not used this feature, but it just that… a fax machine
- You can also fax directly from computer wirelessly
